Meet the Team

Our Japanese Helpers and Friends

Kanuth was very happy to take Mr. & Mrs. Watabe from Japan on safari, they became friends. When the Japanese couple decided to live in Tanzania permanently they asked Kanuth to sponsor them. In return they invested in the lodge, for which Kanuth is very grateful. There are no strings attached to their investment, they do not participate in any decision, nor do they have demands as shareholders would.

Kanuth Tarimo

Kanuth owner of Nyerere Green Lodge

His personal life history & References

After a typical Tanzanian education to GSCE level Kanuth began to work on his nearby mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro as a porter and cook. This experience not only made him a versatile cook but expanded his interest in Tanzanian wildlife, nature and culture. He moved on to accompanying a safari guide as cook, during which time he learnt to drive. With his savings he invested in further education, at PROTS College as a safari guide and, subsequently, in safari management. He then contracted as safari guide for larger safari companies until he was able to purchase his first landrover. At that point he met an Englishman on safari and was offered the job as lodge manager at the Englishman’s lodge near Lake Manyara National Park. He managed the lodge and occasionally took guests on safari to various national parks.

The 2008 bank crisis crippled the smaller safari business all over the world and Kanuth’s lodge had to close down. As part of his redundancy package he was given a landrover from the lodge and although tourism had stopped there were still backpackers on the road, which gave him sufficient funds to raise a small family.

By the time tourism was back in full swing he had opened his own, family business as safari tour operator. Before the pandemic he had saved enough to convince his bank to help him invest in the building of Nyerere Green Lodge but that, too, had to lie in wait until tourism restarted after the pandemic. Thanks to his shrewdness and due to the meeting of his Japanese investors he was able to recommence the building of the lodge. Nonetheless it has been a precarious and up and down economic climate in which Kanuth has made this latest venture, so not everything is happening quite as quickly as he had hoped. Thus he decided to open up his rooms to everyone at backpacker prices until his operation is 100% green.

Mr. Ndago

Watchman

Security Watchman

We are lucky to have Mr. Ndago, who will look after the entire property and the parked cars overnight. Tanzania and Mloka itself are safe, politically and socially stable locations. However, like everywhere in the world there is some criminality which is combatted, in Tanzania, by night watchmen and local police. Having a night watchman is also part of our green mission to employ local people.
